Why we focus on making ultrasonography accessible

Remote communities across Africa bear the highest burden of maternal mortality, with women in rural areas facing death rates up to three times higher than their urban counterparts. This disparity persists largely due to a critical diagnostic gap. Although evidence indicates that ultrasound technology can identify up to 50% of maternal mortality risk factors, approximately two-thirds of African mothers deliver without ever receiving an ultrasound, with this figure reaching an alarming 90% in some regions. Scarcity of ultrasound machines, shortage of trained personnel, and affordability challenges are a barrier to accessing maternal healthcare and receiving ultrasounds. As a result, pregnancy-related complications go undetected, resulting in life-endangering situations for mothers during childbirth. We exist to ensure healthcare providers in these communities are enabled to detect high risk pregnancies in good time for early intervention.
